WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF IDEAS
In 2017, we celebrated 25 years. The thoughts and quotations below document our history, reaffirm the principles that define us, and celebrate the ideas that we will take with us as we move forward.
“I proved to myself that a firm in business could have a social mission and not only survive but prosper. If you regard profit as a byproduct and not the main focus, then performing your mission well will probably produce a profit. I believe that.”
-Dave’s Reflection on Starting The Firm, 1994
WE REGARD OUR ASSOCIATE WITH CLIENTS
as much qualitative as it is quantitative, and our investment approach is in years not quarters. We interpret our job as somewhat broader than just competing with the indices. We think of ourselves as taking care of our clients by taking care of their finances. We’ve grown more than we originally expected which means that we now have quite a few more friends than we had in 1992.
We did manage to avoid areas of the business which were temporary Wall Street fads; we minded our business.
– A Look Back at the Firm’s Beginning
THE BUSINESS THAT WE ARE IN TODAY
is not just selling securities. We are in the business of helping to solve clients’ financial problems.
“Patience is a particularly applicable virtue in investing. We tell ourselves to have patience – many of you simply regard us as a little slow.”
– 2008, Clients’ Quarterly Letter
the real money made in the stock market is produced by buying an outstanding company and owning it over a considerable period of time. The mental bulwarks of this approach are conviction and patience.
“Sound investment policy results from relating the needs of the individual to the world of investments, not from using the investment world to dictate how each individual should invest.”
– The Hunter Team
that our most valuable tool to make rational decisions during irrational and emotional times is the Investment Policy. By utilizing a fixed investment policy, we remove the emotional reaction that market swings cause in many of us. We do this with two primary components – your allocation to bonds (Group I) and your allocation to stocks (Groups II-IV).
“True transparency comes from access to abundant information. However, as sources of information grow exponentially, so does the level of individual bias and misinformation. It is more important than ever to be a critic of information…”
– The Hunter Team
AS A QUICK ASIDE
transparency is the destroyer of secrets.
Our primary goal is to help our clients define and achieve their financial objectives. To do this, we establish an investment plan, adopt an investment policy, including an appropriate asset allocation and select suitable securities to reach these goals. Our further goal is to provide our associates with growth opportunities, a rewarding experience and a pleasant environment. Our success, both financial and otherwise, will be a by-product of achieving these goals.
